Center City Philadelphia is comprised of several charming and historic neighborhoods including: Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square, Society Hill, Old City and Fairmount.
Rittenhouse Square (zip code 19103) Long-considered one of the toniest neighborhoods in the city, Rittenhouse Square isn’t just a sought after address. It’s a lifestyle. And since it is home to a number of hotels, the neighborhood, which spans Market to South streets from the north to south and runs east to west from Broad Street to the Schuylkill River Banks, remains an out-of-towner favorite. Along the Rittenhouse sidewalks — many of which boast seating for alfresco dining and drinking in the warm months — residents and visitors find luxury realestate; high-end stores; locally owned boutiques; small galleries; theaters and entertainment; cafes; beer, wine and cocktail bars; and restaurants of all kinds. With all this, the neighborhood buzzes with activity all year long. Rittenhouse Square offers a oppulent mix of new construction penthouses, historic double wide townhomes and quaint trinities.
Washington Square (zip code 19107) Often described as multiple neighborhoods in one, Washington Square West, is a thriving enclave that includes Avenue of the Arts & Midtown Village. Running roughly from 7th to Broad streets and Chestnut to South streets, the buzzed-about neighborhood is increasingly a go-to spot for trendy restaurants and owner-operated boutiques. Washington Square offers a selection of historic row homes, modern townhomes, high rise condominium buildings and boutique condominium buildings.
Society Hill (zip code 19106) Society Hill is one of Philadelphia’s most historic and celebrated neighborhoods. While mostly residential, the community, which lies between the Delaware River on the east, 8th St. on the west, Walnut St. on the north and Lombard St. on the south, boasts a comfortable combination of restaurants, historic attractions and shops that meet the needs of residents and visitors alike. It was indicated as Philadelphia’s “richest zip code” by the Pew Charitable Trust in 2013.
Old City (zip code 19106) Located next to Independence Mall, where the country’s Founding Fathers declared liberty and built a free nation, Old City still boasts charming cobblestone streets and plenty of 18th-century charm — along with an independent streak that’s evident in everything from its owner-operated shops to its edgy art scene. Its proximity to the Liberty Bell, Penn’s Landing and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge makes Old City, which runs from Vine Street to Walnut Street north to south and from 7th Street to the Delaware River east to west, a favorite for out-of-towners as much as for the residents who call it home. People love the neighborhood for its fashionable boutiques, great restaurants, eclectic galleries and theaters and vibrant nightlife. Especially popular are First Fridays, when art lovers fill the streets and hop from gallery to gallery.
Fairmount (zip code 19130) Resting just beyond Benjamin Franklin Parkway, home to Philly’s truly world-class museums, Fairmount, often referred to as the “Art Museum Area” is synonymous with fine art — but it’s far from the only draw of Center City’s effusive northern neighbor. The neighborhood provides walking-distance access to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Franklin Institute, Rodin and Barnes Foundation. However, Fairmount possesses a distinct personality that thrives independent of those art filled halls. It is location allows city dwellers easy accessibility to the heart of Center City while being located just far enough away from “the city”. Philadelphians who reside here are drawn in equal stead by the proximity to beautiful green space of Fairmount Park, the riverbanks of Boathouse Row and the thriving food scene.
